    These fragile ecosystems support endangered species such as the Chilean giant frog and the Southern River Otter, yet wetlands remain among Patagonia’s most threatened habitats. Travelers may assist with real conservation work such as native planting, wildlife monitoring, camera trap installation, and water quality sampling.

    Today, this vast protected landscape safeguards temperate rainforests, volcanic valleys, fjords, and remarkable biodiversity.     Arrive in Santiago, Chile’s vibrant capital nestled between the Andes and the Pacific. After settling in, meet your TerraFauna Trip Leader and fellow travelers for a welcome briefing and dinner in the bohemian Lastarria neighborhood. Over a thoughtfully prepared meal, begin to unpack the conservation story that awaits, an introduction to the Route of Parks of Patagonia and the profound legacy of Tompkins Conservation, whose vision redefined how national parks are created and protected.

  • Day 2: Rainforests, Volcanoes & Rewilding Chile

    Overnight: Cabaña del Lago

    Fly south to Puerto Montt and journey into the Lakes and Volcanoes region, a land sculpted by fire and water. Stop for an outdoor lunch beneath the towering Fitzroya trees, some over 1,000 years old, before continuing to Puerto Varas, a lakeside town framed by snowcapped volcanoes. In the evening, gather by the fire for an inspiring talk led by Rewilding Chile. Learn how protected areas here are not just scenic wonders but working models of ecological restoration, community empowerment, and a bold rewilding mission now led by Chileans.

    Day 3: Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park & Wetlands Conservation with the Legado Chile Foundation

    Overnight: Cabaña del Lago

    Begin the day exploring Vicente Pérez Rosales, Chile’s first national park. Follow scenic trails along glacial rivers, beneath volcanic peaks, and into misty temperate rainforest. After lunch, collaborate with the Legado Chile Foundation on a hands-on field workshop focused on wetland restoration and endemic species like the elusive Chilean frog and the endangered river otter. This is conservation in motion where local communities, science, and storytelling intersect to restore vital ecosystems.

  • Day 4: Into the Heart of Pumalín Douglas Tompkins Park

    Overnight: Caleta Gonzalo Lodge

    Fly above a spectacular mosaic of volcanoes, fjords, and forests to reach Pumalín Douglas Tompkins National Park, one of the crown jewels of Chile’s Route of Parks. After arriving by boat at Caleta Gonzalo, hike the El Amarillo trail through emerald valleys and forests teeming with life. Visit the park’s ranger headquarters for a private talk on the park’s evolution, from private conservation land to national park, and the long-term stewardship model that empowers local communities as protectors of Patagonia’s wild legacy.

    Day 5: Alerce Forests & Active Volcanoes

  • Day 6: Journey to the Southern Tip

    Fly south from Puerto Montt to Punta Arenas. After arrival, explore the European-style city that has launched countless expeditions to the End of the World. This city marks the gateway to the last wild frontiers of South America.

    Day 7: Cabo Froward & Chile’s First Marine National Park

    Overnight: Hotel Almasur

    Drive to the windswept shores of Cabo Froward, where the Andes tumble into the sea. Trek through lenga forests and along remote pebble beaches to the southernmost lighthouse of continental South America. On the return, board a Zodiac boat for an interpretive ride through the Strait of Magellan, where dolphins, seabirds, and whales are often spotted. Learn about Chile’s first marine national park—slated to open in 2026—and the monumental effort to protect both land and sea in this unique biosphere.

After returning to land, journey inland through vast pampas and rugged ridgelines toward Cerro Castillo, a gateway to Torres del Paine. Along the way, keep your eyes open for guanacos, foxes, and soaring condors as the landscape transforms into high Patagonian steppe.

    Day 9: Puma Tracking & Torres del Paine

    Overnight: Hotel Ovejero Patagónico

In the evening, come together for a reflection circle with your TerraFauna Trip Leader and a conservation partner. Carolina Yañez | Birding & Naturalist guide

Carolina is a marine biologist by profession, but an environmental communicator by passion. Director of the environmental education department of Lontra NGO. She participates in the international committee of the South American Bird Fair and its Education Symposium. Host of the TV children’s series PAJAREANDO APRENDO. The passion for showing the flora and fauna both in the tourist and educational fields are the motor that drives Carolina to travel to different corners of the planet. Full of energy and contagious laughter, Carolina faithfully believes that the conservation of ecosystems is directly linked to environmental education that motivates and sensitizes people. Recognized for her projects as Young Leader 2021 by Fundación Piensa, she currently lives in Viña del Mar.

Matias Ballarini | Birding & Naturalist Guide

Originally from Santiago, capital city of Chile, Matías came to live and work in South Patagonia 12 years ago. Ever since he was a young boy he has been a nature enthusiast. He worked for 6 years at El Colorado, a ski resort nestled in the heart of the central Chilean Andes, where he was in charge of the designing and developing the terrain park. In 2004 he decided to move south and settle in Punta Arenas, where he can work as a guide while still enjoying nature and the outdoors, as well as working on his skills as a birder, after developing an avid interest in birdwatching. He has had the privilege of visiting King George Island in Antarctica, guiding touristic flights and excursions to that remote island, part of the South Shetlands. Between 2008 and 2013 he worked with an American company as a local guide and program director in Buenos Aires, Brazil and the Chilean Lake District, as well as both Chilean and Argentinian Patagonia.

Nicole Arcaya | Birding & Naturalist guide

Nicole Arcaya grew up in the Valparaíso region, amidst the Sclerophyllous forest. This environment inspired her to study Engineering in Renewable Natural Resources at the University of Chile to better understand the relationship between humans and nature. She is a member of the NGO “Red de Observadores de Aves y Vida Silvestre de Chile” (ROC) and serves on its board. Nicole is also involved as an eBird reviewer for Chile. She has worked on the development of Environmental Surveillance Plans, Compliance Plans, Monitoring Programs, and Voluntary Environmental Commitments. Nicole lives in Puerto Varas and leads birding tours throughout Chile. In her free time, she enjoys being in nature, birding, playing board games, drinking mate, and cooking.

  • For Patagonia Rewilded, the group is limited to 12 travelers. This small-group format supports a more spacious, immersive experience—allowing for unhurried connection with Patagonia’s wild landscapes and the rewilding efforts transforming its future.

  • We pour our hearts into crafting meaningful, conservation-driven journeys—and we know that travel plans are a significant investment of both time and intention. While we hope you’ll be able to join us, we understand that circumstances can change. Please review the following policy carefully before booking.


    Standard Cancellation Terms

    • 121+ days (4+ months) prior to departure: A $200 cancellation fee per person will apply.

    • 61–120 days (2–4 months) prior to departure: 50% of the total trip cost, including internal flights, pre/post extensions, and added services (e.g. additional hotel nights), will be non-refundable.

    • 60 days or fewer prior to departure: Unfortunately, we are unable to offer any refunds at this stage due to our financial commitments to local partners and accommodations.

    • For fully private bookings (e.g., you reserve an entire departure), deposits are double the standard rate and remain non-refundable.

  • This journey is designed for active travelers who are comfortable walking and hiking for several hours a day. Activities range from gentle forest walks to more strenuous hikes over uneven terrain, including optional volcano treks and puma tracking in Patagonia.

    You should be able to hike up to 4–6 miles (6–10 km) per day with elevation changes, sometimes in windy or rainy conditions. Zodiac boat rides and light travel days are included to balance the pace. A moderate level of fitness and a spirit of adventure will ensure you get the most out of this experience.

  • The prime travel season for Patagonia is from November to early March, offering long daylight hours, milder temperatures (8–20°C / 46–68°F), and generally stable weather. Our group departures usually take place during this window, ideal for hiking, wildlife spotting, and exploring fjords and forests.

    Expect some variability—Patagonia is famous for its rapidly changing weather, so layering is essential.

  • Yes. Chile is one of the safest and most stable countries in South America.

    We partner with trusted local operators, stay in reputable eco-lodges, and our experienced guides prioritize your safety and comfort throughout the journey.

  • Most travelers from the US, Canada, EU, Australia, and many other countries do not require a visa for stays up to 90 days.

    Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date. Always check current entry requirements before travel.

  • The Chilean Peso (CLP) is the official currency. Credit cards are widely accepted in cities and tourist areas, but cash is recommended for small purchases, tips, or in remote locations.

    ATMs are available in major towns, but we recommend carrying some cash when visiting rural areas.

  • Tipping for lodge staff, local guides, and drivers is included in your TerraFauna package.

    The only gratuity not included is for your dedicated TerraFauna guide; we suggest tipping $10–20 USD per person, per day, based on your satisfaction.

  • We recommend this journey for travelers aged 13 and older. Activities include hiking, wildlife viewing, and boat excursions that require a moderate fitness level.

    For families with younger children, we can design a private, family-friendly version of this journey.

  • Patagonia is a wildlife lover’s paradise. Expect to encounter guanacos (wild relatives of llamas), Andean condors soaring overhead, elusive pumas, Magellanic woodpeckers, foxes, and the endangered huemul deer. Marine life such as dolphins and sea lions can be seen during fjord excursions.
