Animal Welfare Philosophy and Guidelines

At TerraFauna Journeys, our mission is to inspire conservation, one journey at a time.

We believe that travel should deepen our respect for the natural world, not exploit it. As wildlife experiences become increasingly popular, it is our responsibility to ensure that every encounter we design and offer is grounded in integrity, respect, and the well-being of animals.

Our Philosophy

We believe that all animals have intrinsic value and deserve lives free from harm and exploitation.

The most meaningful way to experience wildlife is in the wild, where animals can express their natural behaviors. When animals are under human care, their physical and emotional well-being must be prioritized above all else.

We align with the Five Domains of Animal Welfare, which emphasizes that animals must experience not only good physical health, but also positive mental and emotional states.

This includes:

  • Nutrition: access to appropriate, sufficient food and water

  • Environment: safe, comfortable, and enriching surroundings

  • Health: absence of injury, illness, and distress

  • Behavior: the ability to express natural behaviors

  • Mental state: a life where positive experiences outweigh negative ones

We also recognize that the needs of wild animals can never be fully met in captivity. For this reason, we prioritize models that support protection, rehabilitation, and rewilding over long-term captivity and commercial use.

What We Do Not Support

TerraFauna Journeys does not design, promote, or partner with experiences that involve:

  • Close interaction with wild animals, including touching, riding, bathing, or handling

  • Wildlife performances or shows

  • Photo opportunities with wild animals such as big cats, primates, sloths, or dolphins

  • Activities where animals are used for entertainment, sport, or cultural spectacle that causes harm

  • Facilities that breed or keep wild animals for commercial products

  • Circuses, roadside zoos, or unregulated animal attractions

  • Consumption of products derived from wild animals

  • The purchase of souvenirs made from animal parts

  • Hunting or exploitative fishing practices

These practices are not aligned with our values and often contribute to long-term harm to animals and ecosystems.

What We Do Support

We intentionally design journeys that allow travelers to experience wildlife in ways that are respectful, ethical, and conservation-driven.

This includes:

  • Wildlife viewing in natural habitats at a respectful distance without disrupting behavior

  • Partnerships with conservation organizations and scientists working to protect and restore ecosystems

  • Ethical sanctuaries and rehabilitation centers that prioritize animal welfare and, when possible, reintroduction into the wild

  • Educational experiences that deepen understanding of conservation and responsible travel

Our Commitment

We partner only with organizations and suppliers that share our commitment to animal welfare and conservation.

This includes:

  • Ongoing evaluation of partners and experiences

  • A willingness to decline opportunities that do not align with our standards

  • A commitment to evolving as our understanding deepens

A Shared Responsibility

Travelers are an essential part of this ecosystem.

By choosing TerraFauna Journeys, you are choosing to:

  • Respect wildlife and their habitats

  • Engage thoughtfully and responsibly

  • Support conservation efforts around the world

If you have concerns about an animal encounter during your journey, we encourage you to share them with us so we can address them promptly.

Final Thought

We believe the future of travel must be different. It must protect what is wild, honor those who steward it, and invite travelers into a deeper relationship with the natural world.
